The vital role of relationships and how to strengthen them

ree

We all know relationships are important, but did you know that positive interactions with anyone - partners, friends, family members, colleagues, supervisors, and other community members can have a huge impact on your wellbeing?

Relationships are a key component within the PERMA+ Model of well-being, encompassing the sense of being supported, loved, and valued by others. Humans are inherently social beings, and interestingly, social connection becomes particularly increasingly important as we age. Social environment also plays a vital role in preventing cognitive decline, and strong social networks contribute to improved physical health in older adults.

Strengthening and enhancing existing relationships is a goal for many people. Studies have indicated that sharing good news and celebrating successes can cultivate strong bonds and enrich relationships. Additionally, responding enthusiastically to others, particularly our close relationships, fosters greater intimacy, overall well-being, and satisfaction.

Here are some strategies to bolster your relationships:

  • Explore classes or groups aligned with your interests.

  • Initiate conversations and ask questions of people you haven't had the chance to get to know well to learn more about them.

  • Foster friendships with acquaintances.

  • Reconnect with individuals you haven't spoken to or interacted with in a while.

So today, think about how you can make your relationships even better or build new ones.
